African Americans have American surnames instead of African surnames due to the history of slavery in the United States. During the transatlantic slave trade, enslaved Africans were often given the surnames of their slave owners, resulting in the adoption of European or American surnames. As a result, many African Americans today carry surnames that reflect the legacy of slavery and the forced assimilation into American culture. **
